When a stricker is moving towards your goal you should try to cover as much of the target as possible

  • Position your body in a place which narrows the angle of his shot, making the target smaller.
  • Stay on your feet for as long as possible, if you fall back you provide the striker with an easier oppotunity.

Your goalkeeping performance can be improved using the correct equipment.

  • Padded goalkeeping gloves offer a good grip of the ball and increase the surface area of the hands, thus presenting more of an obstacle.
  • When playing in direct sunlight, a peaked cap is a useful aid in solving the blinding effect of looking into the sun as a high ball comes over.

For shots of shoulder height or lower always aim to collect the ball between your hands and chest.

  • A low bouncing ball can best be collected by placing one knee on the ground and allowing the ball to bounce into the chest as you clasp your hands around the ball.
  • To collect a chest high ball move towards the ball and get your whole body in the line of its flight.
The goalkeeper is often the starting point for an attacking move. The key to this aspect of the game is distribution.
  • Rolling the ball underarm is the most accurate method a goalkeeper has of releasing the ball.
  • The over arm throw offers greater distance and can be used to loft the ball over opponents who may be out of posistion.
